I have a single wire 12 volt alternator on my JD 4020 gas. The crankshaft pulley is probably 6 or 7" diameter. I put the smallest available alternator pulley on. It takes about 1650 or 1700 rpm at the crankshaft to start the alternator. Then it works fine at all engine speeds. You might want to convert that to a three wire alternator so as to not have to spin it up to start charging. Gerald J.
