I've had 2 6V + ground single wire self- exciting alternators built for my JD LA electric start.All the old wiring removed. New ammeter wired in series.New charging wire thru ammeter to neg side of batt. New ground wire from alt case to + side of batt. Problem is I never get a charge into batt. Ammeter always reads 0. Voltmeter always reading batt voltage (6-6.5v) Alternators read 8v when spun on tester at rebuilders shop.Any ideas from anyone???

I guess it's time to change the alt sheave. It's 2 1/2", the engine pulley is 3" and as slow as an LA runs I agree the alt isn't being spun fast enough to energize itself. It will be plowing snow soon so I guess I better "git r done"

I have built quite a few of those one wire conversion alternators,and if not enough rpm to excite the alternator is the problem, then try the smallest alternator pulley to turn it faster.

Plan B would be to install a momentary contact button switch that connects battery voltage to the # 1 regulator blade contact for a moment to excite the alternator after starting the engine.
use a auto parts store $2 replacement regulator plug to connect to the #1 regulator blade. terminal. Your 1 wire regulator will not need the #2 terminal connected to the battery stud to sense voltage,the 1 wire regulator is wired internally to sense voltage without a sense wire. You should only need to push this button once after starting the tractor,as once excited,the alternator will continue to charge even at low rpm.

Plan C,what is the amperage rating of your 1 wire alternator ? A 1 wire alternator with a small 37 amp stator installed will excite at less than half the rpm of a 61 or 72 amp alternator. usuall 37 amps is more than enough for the needs of an antique tractor,so having your alternator shop install a larger 61-or 72 amp stator just makes the alternator much harder to get it charging,as much higher rpm is needed. Maybe all you need to do is have your alternator shop install a 37 amp or smaller stator to fix your problem.

I did a google search for 6 volt pos ground alternator conversion,and found these instructions for exciting POSATIVE ground alternators. Atleast on this conversion,you do not connect the #1 regulator terminal to battery voltage as you would on a NEGATIVE ground alternator. For a POSATIVE ground 1 wire alternator you would connect the momentary contact button switch to the #1 regulator terminal and Ground the other button lead to the alternator case.
This is necessary because they are still using a negative ground regulator in the posative ground alternator. Talk to your alternator shop to see if they are using the same conversion system to come up with a pos ground alternator.

Yes a delco alternator can be converted to 6volt positive ground and many other voltages by using special parts from electrial rebuilder supply catalogs such as Ace Electric.

I have a single wire 12 volt alternator on my JD 4020 gas. The crankshaft pulley is probably 6 or 7" diameter. I put the smallest available alternator pulley on. It takes about 1650 or 1700 rpm at the crankshaft to start the alternator. Then it works fine at all engine speeds. You might want to convert that to a three wire alternator so as to not have to spin it up to start charging.

I gotta agree with John T and old. Most likely the LA is not spinning the alternator fast enough to "turn on" the regulator and causing the alternator to commmence to charge. (Not the alternator's fault incidentally - it's an inherent disadvantage of the single wire, self-exciting regulator design).

Suggest fitting the smallest sheave you can find that will fit the alternator. Keep in mind the alternator rotor must be spun at several times the LA's governed RPM cause it to turn it on. Fortunately once the alternator begins to charge it should continue to do so right down to idle RPM.

Bob, Im liking Old's thinkin on this one as them LA's arent known for any high RPM. Is the belt good n tight and is it possible to install a smaller pulley on the alternator or a larger one (I doubt that) on the Tractor to increase the alternator's RPM??? One disadvantage of One Wire Alternators (depends on their internal regulation circuit) is high RPM to excite them plus some can cause a very tiny trickle discharge. You might check with the alternator vendor cuz on some it may be possible to flash the windings to get her up n running and then she may be okay afterwards.

Sounds like the simple series ammeter circuit is wired correct, if so and if the ammeter is okay (its almost a short circuit), BOTH its terminals should read hot battery voltage at all times. The unloaded open output voltage dont really tell you all that much, its what voltage it can maintain on the battery once coupled to it.

Id check with the alternator vendor as far as RPM requirements and if its possible to flash it???

I've never heard of a 6 volt alternator but, if its is a true 6 volt alternator and a true one wire then your porobably not getting enough RPM to get it to kick in. Most self exciteing alternators need around 2000 RPM to get them to start chargeing
