You might check with the alternator vendor cuz on some it may be possible to flash the windings to get her up n running and then she may be okay afterwards.

Sounds like the simple series ammeter circuit is wired correct, if so and if the ammeter is okay (its almost a short circuit), BOTH its terminals should read hot battery voltage at all times. The unloaded open output voltage dont really tell you all that much, its what voltage it can maintain on the battery once coupled to it.

Id check with the alternator vendor as far as RPM requirements and if its possible to flash it???
