It could be many things.Even a worn lower end can allow more oil to be thrown up onto cylider walls and burned when rings are fine.I still read the service manuals for each motor I have before concluding one bad part because Ive been way off at times and disassembled things needlessly.Start with compression test.Frst dry then wet with squirt of oil.If it goes up it could be rings[valves ok]stays low valves and guides.Compression test has also been sorta replaced by leakdown testers which you can by in the car magazines and need a compressor to pump the air into the cyl.
