I think I'm an expert of what not to do when buying used 3ph disc mowers. Got one at an auction, did not check oil in gear box, box turned out bad even though it still turned. A common problem seems to be that the bottom seal goes bad and lets oil leak down into the cutter bar. Bought a new gear box and went through the cutter bar. Worked fine, then other parts of the drive line and frame gave trouble. The last repair was the spring counterbalance mechanism, which bent after part of the frame twisted. Put new spring assembly on and welded and straightened the frame part. Frame and spring assembly bent again. Gave up throwing money down a hole and bought a new mower. Old mower was a Vicon, new one a 9 ft. Vermeer which had been unsold for a couple of years until the dealer gave up the Vermeer line and I got it from a different dealer that it was sent to. Paid reasonable price since it was old stock. I've decided I would rather have a cheaper brand new(not that Vermeer is cheap) than a used top of the line. I understand why a lot of disc mowers wind up in a fence row rather than being repaired. Don't know whether to repair the old one to sell it, or part out the almost new gear box and god cutter bar. Am going to be sure the new one gets perfectionest, Allan in NE type maintenance. At least we finally got some rain, 5 1/2 inches in 2 days. Probably only 12 or so inches down for the year now. KEH
