OT Chimney revisited

I have a brick fireplace with a chimney extending about 12 feet above the firebox. I've used it for forty years and it was old when I bought the place. It works flawlessly.

I noticed recently that the top bricks are loose. I also noticed that there is no flew liner inside, just bricked up. Since I now need to fix the top should I put a liner in the section to be repaired or would that just invite trouble?
