OT Chimney revisited

I have a brick fireplace with a chimney extending about 12 feet above the firebox. I've used it for forty years and it was old when I bought the place. It works flawlessly.

I noticed recently that the top bricks are loose. I also noticed that there is no flew liner inside, just bricked up. Since I now need to fix the top should I put a liner in the section to be repaired or would that just invite trouble?

Wood fires and unlined chimneys DO NOT mix. Creosote in the wood eats the mortar, sooner or later you'll have problems.

It's against code in most states to hook a wood stove to an unlined chimney, and ALL insurance companies frown on it. Same deal for a fireplace.

If you're going to use the fireplace, line the chimney.

I agree completely with Fawteen. If ya don't like your shop, keeping burning hot wood in that unlined chimney. BTDT. That is why so many places burned down way back when. They didn't have liners back then and thought that nothing would burn through solid bricks. We all know better. All it takes is one hot spark through a brick at the bottom of the chimney somewhere to start a fire. Are you willing to take that chance? Harley

I should have explained. There is a 300# insert in the fireplace, the chimney rarely even gets warm. No fire on the bricks. I inspect it regularly for cresote buildup.

Thanks for your concerns.
