Andrew, When using a 4 pole VR with the (L)oad terminal, the L terminal is what feeds hot battery voltage to all the loads such as lights and igition via the BAT input terminal on those switches. On a 3 pole VR that doesnt have the extra 4th L terminal, those loads are fed voltage from the ammeters Load terminal, being the same ammeter terminal that wires down to the BAT terminal on the VR. Sooooooo the ammeters load terminal wires to the BAT terminal on that VR and then a wire from its L terminal is what feeds input voltage to lights and ignition switch(es). Its possible to make a 3 pole VR work in place of a 4 or vice versa, its just a matter of where loads like lights n ignition receive their voltage from, the load side of the ammeter on a 3 pole VR system but the L terminal on the 4 pole VR system.

To answer your question, the L terminal wires up to the dash to power up the switches (lights and/or ignition) on their BAT input terminals.
