I don't think you have a problem. The exhaust has cooled alot when it gets back there. I have the same situation on my street rod. I cut a piece of the bubble insulation with foil on both sides and used weatherstrip adheasive to glue it to the tank, painted it black. It's been there 11 years through some 11 hour driving days with never a problem.
