Actually it could be the distributor, oil pump, cam, hydraulic pump, etc that are all gear driven. sounds like you need to pull that front cover.
Good luck I have the IT manual that covers that tractor for specific questions, I will look them up in there. You can email me, but I only check those maybe once daily.
