Hello!
Help! Got a 2424 that had a blown head gasket - got the head off, trying to remove pistons, got #1 out but engine is bound in a position that doesn't allow complete access to rod cap bolts to remove the next one. Won't turn enough to bring the crank around so I can get to it.

Any ideas?
Thanks!

Dunno RW,

There's gotta be a reason there somewhere why it won't turn. Should be evident too when it comes to the "stop".

Allan, your picture is exactly what I see - the stop is the problem! On mine the crank is turned so that the bolts are up against the block and I can get enough force to break it loose. Took the strength of 10 Grinches and a short cheater bar to get the first one out! I think that stupid (me) let it set too long and the pistons have a slight rusting to the wall and it wont budge. Is there any way to get it around just a little so I can remove the others?

Thanks so much!

Yes,

Don't take the rod bolts loose until you get it in position because there is not enough room for that crank to turn with one rod off and hanging free.

Bump the starter and see if it will jar 'er loose. If it has only been setting a short while, it ought to come.

There are no bolts "in the way" for sure and the starter won't bump it around. I am a loss as to how to get it around to get access to the other bolts!

RW,

Was this engine turning okay when ya opened it up? No mechanical damage? Just a bad head gasket?

How long has it been setting?

Allan

Allan, it was running like I had some bad gas, missing, etc. but running - then it would turn over but not start, later it would not turn over before I opened her up - the only thing I've found so far is 2 slightly bent push rods. I want to say it has been about 5-6 months.

If it turns some and then comes to an abrupt halt, sounds like something is bad wrong.

I would really look at the rods in the area where the head gasket leaked. If the cylinder filled with antifreeze and hydro locked, trying to start it could have bent a rod.

Look at it closely, because if you try to force it in this situation, you could do more damage.

Sounds like whatever it is happened before you put the wrenches to 'er, so I really doubt if it is just a "rust" problem.

Dunno,

Allan

Thanks Allan - where are you in NE? My wife was at Offut for awhile, so we lived in Bellevue. Good times in Omaha, etc. - pretty cold sometimes, culture shock when I saw folks bringing in their car batteries at night! Ha! Thanks for your help!

No sir. I am at the point, head is off, pressure tested ok, 2 push rods were slightly bent - the first cylinder is out, looks okay, rings have some rusting. Could the hydraulic pump on the front be locking it from turning around?

Yes I believe it could. It is gear driven I believe. I would strip down the front. Have you removed the pushrods and lifters ?

First I want to thank you guys for replying, I want all to know that I really do appreciate the help and support. Thank you!

The rods are out but nothing on the lifters. The is a panel on the side that I can remove to access these? How will I know if all is ok in here? Should I get the pump unhooked from the front first?

Again, thanks!

Gas - and it is extremely fuel efficient right now, if you know what I mean! Either Laugh or Cry and I prefer Laughter!

I know what you mean my 2444 has a slightly larger engine than yours. But it is not too bad as I just use it for odd jobs and some occasional Bush Hogging.
Is yours just the tractor or does it have a loader ?

It has a loader. Is there an access plate on the side to get at the lifters and check out the cam? Maybe some is not right and wedging a lobe against the block?

Thanks

Actually it could be the distributor, oil pump, cam, hydraulic pump, etc that are all gear driven. sounds like you need to pull that front cover.
Good luck I have the IT manual that covers that tractor for specific questions, I will look them up in there. You can email me, but I only check those maybe once daily.
Glad to help you thru your problem.

Take the main bearing caps off and drop the crank down ? A two person job I would think but should work.

Excuse the Rookie here, but these are the 3 "collars" (journals?) If I take these off, will the crank come straight down once I break the pistons free? Don't be too alarmed, haven't had any real engine experience but If I see it come apart - I can grasp what it going on.

Thanks

RW,

Find the problem of the bind first.

If that crank has to been dropped, I think I'd yank the engine and flip 'er upsidedown before I tried to wiggle 'er out of there.

Something is just flat wrong here.

Allan
