I mow my ditches, but $10 per year in fuel for the weed eater or push mower isn't going to break me either.
Now I wouldn't be running my diesel tractor and brushhog to get er done, but with the small engines being pretty efficient, I am not changing my ways. I live in a rural area with plenty of habitat for small game, so no worries there.
