Adjust the center screw on the sector cover. Place the gear in the center of its travel with the wheels pointing forward. Loosen the center screw locknut while holding the screw itself agaiinst rotation. Once the locknut is loose and backed off snug the screw down. This pushes the sector teeth down into the ball nut teeth. Once it is snugged down loosen it 1/4 turn. Then with the screw held against rotation tighten the locknut. Check to make sure that the gear does not bind after this adjustment. That is the best you can do. Any additional freeplay has to be worn shaft, worn bushings, worn gear teeth, etc. Check to make sure that the flex coupling (rag coupling)in the connecting shaft from the steering wheel is not all shot and loose. It is relatively easy to replace. Make sure the bolts that hold the gear to the frame are tight and that the frame is not cracked at that location. Check to make sure that the pitman arm is firmly attached to the lower end of the sector shaft. The input shaft should not move in and out of the gear box itself. Finally check the tie rod ends to make sure they are not all loose and shot. Check the drag link and the idler arm for looseness in both the side to side and up and down directions. I would have thought that the garage where you had the ball joints replaced would have done all this but in this day and age you are lucky to find a decent doctor let alone a mechanic
