hello david.. alfalfa is THE BEST hay to be had here in the US.. only horse people would rather have grass hay.. it is too rich for the horses. it is not too hard to get a good stand, if you plow the field under good, to get rid of as much grass as posible.. the grass will after time crowd out the alfalfa. it gives better yeilds then any kind of grass here in the US.. and other than grass alfalfa is about the only kind of hay grown in the US (at least in THIS part)
it will give many cuts a year.. about three is the norm here in Indiana.. though last year it was so dry we only got two. this year I think I will get around four. some years I have seen as many as five or six cuttings a year..
as far as the rake, there is VERY few being used here.. most everybody uses the newer two wheeled rakes..
