Great pics Tim! Are the rake tires still available? I have an antique orchard sprayer with wood barrel type tank. It has 6" X 36" tires that are hard from age.I don't think anyone makes tires like that anymore.

as far as I know they are not any more. I planed on welding a flat peace of steel on the rims, then bolting on a peace of baler belting. TSC has some with like tire tread on it. I thought that would work pretty good.. the tires on my rake are about a field from blowing-out.. :(

Hey Tim;
Nice to see how its done in your part of the World. Ive seen alfalfa (we call it lucerne here) a few times in my travels around England. I'm told it makes beautiful & paletable cattle feed. But its hard to establish a crop - is that right?
Again I'm told that its not a high yield, but will give several cuts. Tell me more please.
I love that Rake, theres nothing like that style used here, I've seen modern versions in books & brochures on US machinery. Funny how we speak the same language yet use such different machines.
Cheers David

hello david.. alfalfa is THE BEST hay to be had here in the US.. only horse people would rather have grass hay.. it is too rich for the horses. it is not too hard to get a good stand, if you plow the field under good, to get rid of as much grass as posible.. the grass will after time crowd out the alfalfa. it gives better yeilds then any kind of grass here in the US.. and other than grass alfalfa is about the only kind of hay grown in the US (at least in THIS part)
it will give many cuts a year.. about three is the norm here in Indiana.. though last year it was so dry we only got two. this year I think I will get around four. some years I have seen as many as five or six cuttings a year.. as far as the rake, there is VERY few being used here.. most everybody uses the newer two wheeled rakes.. if you have any more questions that I might be able to awnser just let me know.

My Dad bought a new IH rake just like that, right after WW2. It came on steel and he converted it to Rubber before he ever used it. He also bought a David Bradley rake at the same time and a IH 50T baler.

I have one of those, I quit useing it becasue of a part in the gear box that broke. I also know of a place/guy that can get you new tires for it but, they cost big $$$$. I asked him about tires for the one I have and he said yep he could get them but the cost was something like $400 each and that was 10 years ago. But I'm sure he can still get them since he owns the molds

I found one identical to that one but it has the steel wheels front and back. Been looking at it from the deer stand for 5 years now. I can have for $25, what are they worth. I checked it and I could pull it out from the tree line and rake hay with it, afte some fresh grease of course.

yeah, bought mine three years ago.. was a pile of rust, froze up so bad it would not turn over.. and coverd with old grease.. grease was hard as a rock.. after lots of PB, scraping and a can of paint, worth about 100 for a rake I would say.. or 500 for the wheels on ebay.. LOL!

Nah, not quiet 100 years old. I have the same one, on rubber and all. The manual I have was printed in '45, which would be about right. Not a whole lot was on rubber up until then.

I have one of those McCormick Deering rakes too. I have been wondering about the model number and age range. Do you know when they were last made?

Well, I lied in my first post, the rake's manual was printed in 1950, not '45.

In one of the Farmall books I have kicking around here there's a picture of one being pulled behind a SA that was being tested by IH. The SA came out in '47 so if I had to guess they probably made them up into the early '50s.

Mine is the 3 bar version, they also made the four bar version. The official name is "McCormick Side Rake and Tedder".

We had a steel wheeled 3 bar McD rake on the farm years ago. It had open gears and would rotate in either direction. The one I have now is a rubber tired 4 bar. It has an enclosed gearbox and will only rake, not ted.

those crazy wheel rakes are great if one has flat ground. Put 1 on a 20% slope, go downhill & turn & you will see what I mean.

Turning in general is a challenge!

They're really quite light, but on the other had they're kind of big and awkward. The whole pivot in the front and turn in the back with the offset factored in really makes you stop and think in tight areas.
