I don't know whether to attribute hitch pins coming out to gremlins, the Dark Side, vibration, bad luck, or whatever, but if you pull enough equipment enough years, it'll happen. I've never lost one on the road, because I use the hairpins or a self-locking pin. I've had two come out when transporting equipment around the farm, each time without a hairpin, and within 5 minutes of when I hitched up for a short trip. Both times, a hydraulic hose was what kept things together.
