Sounds like you need to close off the top of your pen with chicken wire. Running a hot wire over the top of the fence is probably going to be a greater hazard to you than a critter; you can touch the hot wire while you're standing on the ground, but a coon or other varmint can't.

Where's your dog when this is going on? When my wife had chickens, we never lost a single one, so long as the dog was loose in the yard.
