Well 2 or 3 weeks ago I had 30 chickens now I'm down to 9. Varment what ever it is comes in the day or night and even eats them in the chicken house. Just lost one 10 minutes ago or so. Wife said the chickens where raiseing H$ll but I didn't get out fast enough to blow what ever it was away. Now heres the question if I rig a hot wire up at the top of the fence and use 110 volts and a light bulb will that kill what ever is getting in of just zap the H$ll out of them??

Do you leave the coop open at night or close them in after they all have roosted. I have free range chickens, but close them up at night. Never lost one at night - it's the hawks during the day that bother me! Usually don't have trouble in the Summer. The hawks are hungrier in Winter and food is less plentiful. Just make a plywood door for the coop and close them in at night.

I use the cage traps. Bait with sardines or a can of tuna fish. I had one of the coyote traps that had a area in hte end so you could put a live chicken or duck in. Someone else liked the trap better than I did and it disappeared.

Usually when the necks are torn, it's a weasel, and it kills because it can. Leg traps, 12 gauge, whatever. We kept them out of the chicken house with wire screen.

Get a pygmy (wether) HORNED goat and keep it with the chickens. Of course, you'd have to keep the chicken feed out of reach of the goat. The goat will threaten and deter most varmints, especially those able to geet inside of an enclosed coop. If it's coyotes, this might not work, but if it's racoons, oppossums, or foxes, the varmints will take one look at your belligerant goat and look elsewhere.

Any idea what it is? Neighbors dogs, coyote, weasel, coon? I shot a BIG feral house cat that I caught with an adult hen in it's claws. Should be an open season on feral cats and dogs. I hate to kill them but they do more damage than cars even IMHO.

Sounds like you need to close off the top of your pen with chicken wire. Running a hot wire over the top of the fence is probably going to be a greater hazard to you than a critter; you can touch the hot wire while you're standing on the ground, but a coon or other varmint can't.

Where's your dog when this is going on? When my wife had chickens, we never lost a single one, so long as the dog was loose in the yard.

Old I had you figured for back feeding a transformer and powering the wire with 14.4K after reading about the 44 in the coop the other day. GRIN-LOL how is your hearing? I am partial to my Ruger redhawk 44mag.

About 14.4k would be about right, but from a mains operated stock-fence energiser! Run around near the ground outside and above the top fence line might deter anything which has to climb the fence. Not quite so potentially lethal as the usual "Old" OTT response!
