I haven't kept up with all the latest consumer truck-diesel info - but. When GM, Ford, and Dodge came out with their lines of diesel pickup trucks (I'm not counting the early GM 5.7s or early Dodge with Mitsubishi six cylinder diesels) - the engines carried a rating of either "light duty" or "medium duty." The phrases indicate estimated life which used to be done by miles, but is now rated by gallons of fuel consumed.
All the GMs (6.2s and 6.5s) and Fords (IH 6.9 and 7.3s) are "light duty diesels", whereas the Dodge (Cummins 5.9) is "medium duty diesel." Anticipated life of the light-duties is around 200K and the medium-duty around 500K. Engines rated as "heavy duty", as used in big-rigs are usually certified to have a life of at least 1,000,000 miles.
And of course, there are odd-ball examples either way. I have an 87 Chevy with a 6.2 that now has 340,000 miles on it and has never been torn down. I've heard of Cummins 5.9s with over 700,000 on them.
The new rating that uses gallons of fuel used, instead of miles, compensates for varibles in driving and load conditions.
