There is a "million mile club" for dodge truck owners with over a million miles on the original engine and there are several in the club. One of them had 1.3 or 1.7 million documented miles the last I heard but these guys are putting miles on fast and are highway miles. If the body is in good shape I wouldn't be worried about the miles.

Don't know about Dodge/Cummins but Ford's 6 liter is good for only about 120K miles. That's what the shop foreman at the local Ford dealer told me. I just had $6k worth of warranty work done on my engine at 70K miles. Took two weeks to get it done because the diesel mechanics were so backed up. Next truck is going to be a Dodge.

But will you be saying this after your 100K mile warranty expires and you are faced with replacing your engine, paying for it out of your own pocket?

Cummins rates their "medium duty" 5.9 diesel with an average life of 350,000 miles before a tear-down. I haven't kept up with all the latest consumer truck-diesel info - but. When GM, Ford, and Dodge came out with their lines of diesel pickup trucks (I'm not counting the early GM 5.7s or early Dodge with Mitsubishi six cylinder diesels) - the engines carried a rating of either "light duty" or "medium duty." The phrases indicate estimated life which used to be done by miles, but is now rated by gallons of fuel consumed. All the GMs (6.2s and 6.5s) and Fords (IH 6.9 and 7.3s) are "light duty diesels", whereas the Dodge (Cummins 5.9) is "medium duty diesel." Anticipated life of the light-duties is around 200K and the medium-duty around 500K. Engines rated as "heavy duty", as used in big-rigs are usually certified to have a life of at least 1,000,000 miles. And of course, there are odd-ball examples either way. I have an 87 Chevy with a 6.2 that now has 340,000 miles on it and has never been torn down. I've heard of Cummins 5.9s with over 700,000 on them. The new rating that uses gallons of fuel used, instead of miles, compensates for varibles in driving and load conditions.

M-kid,
I have one with 250K on it...runs fine. I know a man who retired from Cummins. He claims with care they run 1/2 Mil easy.
Normal maintenance is about all it takes to keep them young.
The body will give up before the engine.

There was a 95 that supposedly has a million miles on it in Farm Show magazine a while back.

I have a customer who delivers RV trailers from factories to dealers. Last time he was in with his 94 dodge cummins it had 530,000 miles on it and the engine had never been opened up.

Reason he was in was to replace the valve train gasket on the side of the engine. Haven't seen him in about 3 months.
