With the throud off, along the flywheel are 1 or 2 electronic coil pickups, (I can't remember if there is 1 or 2). These are what tell your ignition coil when to fire a spark to the plugs. One wire from your coil should lead you to them. Check for wire damage as you go. They are probably bad, as they are about the only part you have left to change. If you have 2 on the engine, I'd replace both together, as the other will probably fail next week. I don't know if there is a test you can perform on them. Maybe someone with an Onan service manual could help. That engine was used on some John Deere, and other manufacturers equipment. Save your old parts, the regulator is probably ok, it has nothing to do with the ignition, only battery charging.
