Because of the way the hydrolics were made on the tractor, some tractors like the Ford or Ferguson are designed for to be able to control depth (The big feature of the Ferguson System) while other makes or models and all the aftermarket 3 point hitches are not designed for depth control, therefore the gage wheel, also in extreeme conditions the tractors made for without will have a hard time holding position so the gage wheel will help hold setting
