Why do some 3-pt. plows have a left side gauge wheel.....most don't.....why were they installed...is it better to have one ???

Thanks Karl

It is kind of complicated, but I will try to be brief. Even when a tractor has a good draft control system, in a field with severe variance between hard and soft land, it will allow the plow to go too deep in the softest areas without a guage wheel. With a guage wheel you can use in combination with draft control, thus in the hard areas of the field, the draft control will limit depth to max draft you have set, and the guage wheel will limit depth on the softest areas. This is condensed from the Operator Manual of my MF Model 74 plow. Tom

Because of the way the hydrolics were made on the tractor, some tractors like the Ford or Ferguson are designed for to be able to control depth (The big feature of the Ferguson System) while other makes or models and all the aftermarket 3 point hitches are not designed for depth control, therefore the gage wheel, also in extreeme conditions the tractors made for without will have a hard time holding position so the gage wheel will help hold setting

Hi Karl,

I can only speak to spinners 'cause they are the only kind of plows I know, but the gauge wheel sets the depth of the plow.

And, if for some reason that wheel doesn't catch when she comes around, the plow heads fer China; really makes a mess, digs a ditch like you wouldn't believe.

Most 3-point plows in my area do have some sort of depth wheel. On large mounted plows, they help a lot to maintain the depth on the rear of the plow. The one I use has a tendancy to want to dig, and it needs to be held out by the linkage and the wheel. If there was no wheel, the rear of the plow would go too deep, and want to lay over to the left.
