Yup - you can test the coil for continuity with your multimeter. A good B&S coil will show resistance from the plug wire to ground of around 2,500 ohms (up to 500 ohms or so higher or lower is OK). Resistance from primary wire to ground should be a few tenths of an ohm - ie. almost a dead short. (Disconnect the primary wire from the breaker points and condensor before testing measuring). Note this test only looks for continuity in the primary and secondary windings - it does not identify a high voltage short to ground in the secondary, etc. Most local mower shops will stock ignition parts for that old engine at reasonable prices. Compression pressure of 42 psi doesn't sound too far off. Keep in mind those old B&S engines are very low compression (like 3:1 or lower) by design!
