It's been a while since I looked at one. But I seem to recall the Diesel Kiki pumps on the early 80's Izusu PU/Trooper had an external lift pump to feed the injection pump. It was similar to the mechanical fuel pump found on carbureted car engines. Obviously an in-tank electric pump would have worked too.
