Synthetic oil is not some super slick substance that prevents wear any more then regular motor oil. It has two advantages, less thermo break down and the ability to suspend more impurities. The combination of those two qualities is why synthetic oil can run longer between oil changes. If you are not running an engine in extreme conditions (and I really doubt you are in your Cub Cadet) you gain little except for a new way to spend more money. Some newer small engine manuals do allow for the use of synthetic oil but recommend the same oil change interval, so you gain nothing by synthetic oil’s ability to suspend more impurities. As for the "thinner" claims, 10W-30 is 10W-30 dino, synthetic or fake synthetic, if it where thinner then that the viscosity number would change - to 5W-20 or 0W-20.
