Detergent oil is the only way to go - although you might drop the pan to clean the sludge out of it first then do a short run on the new oil & filter. Some people think that all the dirt runs to the bottom of the engine and collects there while the rest of the engine stays clean – like magic. Deposits collect in every "low" point in the engine - especially bearings. Without detergenated oil to keep the dirt in suspension you have deposits through out you engine causing wear. That and most nondetergentated oils are the lowest form of lube on earth, many have an SA rating while almost all other oils have an SL rating, including the "cheap" Wal-Mart oil.
