I have been in the parts business for a lot of years. I can tell you alot of what is wrong behind the parts counter. The first post in this series was a man, been in the parts business for ten months and thinks he is a front line counterman. I can tell reading between the lines that he probably will not make it after ten years. He speaks of these newbie guys. With ten months he's not exactly a veteran. He also states that when he runs into a problem, first thing he does is call someone on the phone to help out, and do his job for him. He talks about computers. Well computers do not take away the individuals level of doing his job. Computers are a great asset in the parts business, just got to be smart enough to know when to rely on common sense, and when to use the computer. I feel sure that manufactures are still printing catagogs, to be used in conjuction with the computer. Could possibly cost the dealer a few bucks, but worth it. About Auto Zone and a lot of the other retail stores. They are retail oriented and could care less about your particular problem with your John Deere M. They pull people in, train for thirty minutes on the computer, and they have a sales clerk, not a parts man. These stores are not in the same league with the traditional jobbers, a different business. And last you say you graduated from college with a B.S degree. What are you doing behind a parts counter?

He got this wild idea that we should get a convoy of AC tractors and drive them from Charlotte, Michigan 105 miles to LaGrange, Indiana.
