If you have a narrow front, the mud will pack in between the wheels and they more or less just slide. Then you are trying to plow with them and the rear wheels will spin. A wide front end will tend to keep rolling, but only to a point. Once the front wheels stop turning, you are done.
That's why front wheel assist is such a huge benefit in mud. But of course the bad news is that when you get one of them stuck, they are really STUCK.
