It takes a little getting used to to operate these balers, but I think they are not that bad. I use a 605 D vermeer for the last 25 years with good luck.
The 504 and 605 are similair balers but the 504 makes smaller bales.
Check out that top roller behind the pickup if it still has the rubber on it all the way, if it don't it will not grab the hay, and make sure there is about a 1/8" space between top and bottom roller. you adjust that with the compression springs on each side of the baler.
slightly damp hay will feed in well but it will glaze over on the rubber roller,and becomes to slippery to grab the hay and you have to wash it of with the waterhose. It happens mainly with alphalpha. Also 10" wide belts will make all the difference in starting a bale.
Check for excesive play in the gearbox as well.
New ones are expensive , around 800 bucks.
