I'm looking at round balers for my cousin. He has a limited budget and only plans on making about 50-60 bales a year. I found a 504C Vermeer for $1200.00. It's at a dealership and they told me it was making hay up till the owner traded it in on a newer model. Has new tires and looks pretty solid. A little rust, but nothing major. Anybody have any experience with one of these? Anything I should be looking for in particular? Any tips on using this machine? Any input would be appreciated.

The C is still the closed throat style, older idea, not very flexable.... No one gives over $500 for one of those around here. The F & newer are better, open throat models.

It takes a little getting used to to operate these balers, but I think they are not that bad. I use a 605 D vermeer for the last 25 years with good luck.
The 504 and 605 are similair balers but the 504 makes smaller bales.
Check out that top roller behind the pickup if it still has the rubber on it all the way, if it don't it will not grab the hay, and make sure there is about a 1/8" space between top and bottom roller. you adjust that with the compression springs on each side of the baler.
slightly damp hay will feed in well but it will glaze over on the rubber roller, and becomes to slippery to grab the hay and you have to wash it of with the waterhose. It happens mainly with alphalpha. Also 10" wide belts will make all the difference in starting a bale.
Check for excesive play in the gearbox as well.
New ones are expensive , around 800 bucks.

Hope this helps

Never did use one but I don't think they were too good. If it has a roller at the back of the pick up fingers that compresses the hay as it enters the bale chamber it is a closed throat baler that would not start bales too well if the hay was the least bit green or damp. Also it would not pack the hay as tight as later balers. The F, G, and H balers are similar in that they have an open throat that starts bales better when adjusted right. I did have one of these. I now have an I model which is a big improvement over the H series. Packs hay tighter and the Super I does still better.

I think $1200 is too much but I don't know what they sell for. I would check the condition of the belts and chains on whatever baler you look at. If at all possible see the baler hooked up and running. The I baler I have now was a creampuff that obviously had been stored inside. When I got it home and hooked to the tractor I found it had a bad bearing and main drive roller. Dealer did provide parts, but I had the privilege of doing the work.
