That sounds like a disengaging coupling. It
can be removed and replaced with a new one.
The grease fitting unscrews and a roll pin
is pushed through the center and out the
other side, where a second fitting should
have existed. These are about 50.00 and
are common parts for tractors of this age that
do not have one built into the transmission.
They keep the tractor from being driven foreward
by the rotating blades of a brush hog, for example.
