My PTO hook-up on NAA seems to have a degree of play in it...the splined shaft can be moved fm side to side and was wondering if that is a normal condition/how much play is normal. Am sort of ignorant on this tractor but it sure does run good!

02: I am surprised that this has not been covered. I have a 53 NAA and one of the first things I did to it was take the 1 1/16 inch six spline shaft off and put the more modern 1 3/16 inch six spline shaft on. This is an easy fix. All the 20-30 years of splines are now 1 3/16 inch diameter. I hope this is what you need. Post back if this does not make sense and I am way off base.... Gerry p.s. you maybe able to get an adapter if you don't want to change out the shaft.

Check the differential for oil level.Sounds like it already leaked out.

It shouldnt have much play, unless it has an adapter on the smaller shaft, and the play you feel is actually the adapter moving. Does it leak oil? I would think if the actual shaft had play it would chew up whatever seal is in there and oil would leak pretty badly.

No leaks, it has a grease fitting on it and a seal (I think) which looks pretty worn. Would a photo of it help?

Dennis,

That sounds like a disengaging coupling. It can be removed and replaced with a new one.
The grease fitting unscrews and a roll pin is pushed through the center and out the other side, where a second fitting should
have existed. These are about 50.00 and are common parts for tractors of this age that
do not have one built into the transmission.
They keep the tractor from being driven foreward
by the rotating blades of a brush hog, for example.
