JD used to sell a 0w-40, or 5w-40 syn. we used it in our feeding tractors-JD4440, jd4430, ford 4000gas, and it really helped them start in the winter, and build oil pressure quicker when very cold. our local dealer quit carrying it, and now is a special order item, and you have to order like 6 cases at a time to get it. now in the ford we found a 5w-20 from motorcraft to run in the winter, we've had trouble with it building oil pressure in good time, even after a new oil pump. regarding the oil changes, we try to change them 2x/year if not getting used alot. Most of our use occurs in the summer w/ haying, so we change them in the fall after that is done, and then after the temps equalize and get out of the rise/fall cycle in the spring, we'll change them again to make sure there is no condensation in it before we put them to hard work in the spring. if i was only going to change them 1x, i'd do it in the spring. we just figure better safe than sorry.
