When to change the oil?

I have 2 tractors, one is a IH 140 that gets used about 5 or 6 times a year for about 30 minutes to an hour at a time. I also have a Ford 4610 which gets used a lot more but since I have quit farming it does not get used at all during the winter. I use it to bush hog and plant a few green fields for deer season.

I know that I cannot go by the hours I put on these tractors for an indicator as to when to change the oil. How often, based on time and not usage, should I change the oil in these 2 tractors? I know there are a lot of collectors out there with many many tractors and I doubt they change the oil in all of them every 3 months or even once a year.

I have been going with once a year for both, changing the oil and oil filter. Is there a synthetic oil I should use instead of the regular oil I have been using.

I also have a 1997 Ford F-350 for a 460 V8 with 72,000 miles on it. I guess I have the same question for it since it has had 2000 miles put on it in the past 2 years.

Thanks for any input.

In addition to condensation you have got to deal with fuel dillution. Every time you crank it over raw fuel gets into the cylinder and then on down to the oil. I try to change mine about 3 times a year.

JD used to sell a 0w-40, or 5w-40 syn. we used it in our feeding tractors-JD4440, jd4430, ford 4000gas, and it really helped them start in the winter, and build oil pressure quicker when very cold. our local dealer quit carrying it, and now is a special order item, and you have to order like 6 cases at a time to get it. now in the ford we found a 5w-20 from motorcraft to run in the winter, we've had trouble with it building oil pressure in good time, even after a new oil pump.

regarding the oil changes, we try to change them 2x/year if not getting used alot. Most of our use occurs in the summer w/ haying, so we change them in the fall after that is done, and then after the temps equalize and get out of the rise/fall cycle in the spring, we'll change them again to make sure there is no condensation in it before we put them to hard work in the spring. if i was only going to change them 1x, i'd do it in the spring. we just figure better safe than sorry.

Hi David,

If your in a cold climante then I would change oil every year as mositure and oil create a very nasty acid.

I like Chevron oils. I used Pennzoil and Quaker State for the past 40yrs but both have failed me as I started using oil way above my normal usage. I switched brands to Chevron Surpreme on my gassers and Delo on my diesels and my oil consumption went back to normal.

As a side benefit, my gasser car increased fuel mileage by 12% after switching to Chevron Surpreme. Not a fluke as my son also seen a 10% increase on his gasser. No other changes were made at the time.

The only way I've been able to make synthetic pay on paper is too travel many thousands of miles each year. For the average user it's just not cost effective.

The new oils from Mobil may be what you need, they have increased the additive package about 30% to allow much longer between changes, while still maintaining good additive protection.
I believe thay are at 5000 miles for mineral oil,7500 for synthetic blend and 15000 for pure synthetic. I have used the Mobil 1 pure synthetic for over 20 years at once per year changes(usually 10-13,000 miles). Oil analysis has found that the oil is good for far more miles than I put on,and now should be even better with the improved additive package.

I, like many others on this board, have way more tractors than I need and don't farm full time. I currently got 4 running tractors (and 2 that don't) and don't have a single cow on the place. About all the use they see is what little I do while hobby farming. I raise and sell a couple acres of hay and do maple sugaring. I also till a couple gardens in the spring and do some brush hogging in the summer, but, they still don't see all that much use. I usually change the oil every year spring before they get used. I like to change it in the spring because they have all sat the entire winter, and I'm sure condensation has gotten in the oil. My Farmall H had gotten condensation in the gas over setting since October, and when I went to use it this spring, I used it for a day, then when I started it up the next, it didn't run too long before it quit, upon inspection, I found the problem to be the settling bowl for the gas had filled full of water and had froze so no gas could get through, I took it off and emptyied it out, and no more problems, but it was surprising how much condensation had gotten in there, engine oil I'd imagine would be the same way. Yeah oil and filters cost right up there, but it's never been a cheap hobby and a destroyed engine is even more costly!.

The problem I have with leaving old oil over the winter is that the acids that have developed in the oil during use are sitting in the engine.
Condensation in the oil will burn off when the engine is running the oil gets above the boiling point of water pretty quickly so as long as you run the machine for more than a few minutes you'll be okay.

Of course to contradict myself today's oils are pretty darned good so its quite likely that the oil will be able to neutralize the acid built up over a limited amount of running during the summer and it'll be fine during the winter...

So basically its probably fine either way.

I agree with the others, synthetic oil doesn't have a place in an engine that isn't working really hard or used alot. I run it (10w30) in my Dodge Dakota (185,000 miles) and it helped cure a rear main seal leak. Oil analysis indicates that truck has fairly substantial fuel in the oil at 8,000 miles mostly because it doesn't get driven enough.
My diesel Mercedes car also gets Mobil 1 (15w50) I haven't driven it enough to know how long I'll go between changes, probably more like 10k since I drive the car 450 miles a week commuting.

My Farmall Super M gets the oil changed whenever I get to it. Its been something like 3 years now which is really bad. I'm going to try to do it this spring especially as I want to do some plowing. I run the tractor about 20 hours a year, a good schedule would be to change the oil in the fall.
I've got something like 2 gallons of Valvoline 10w30 hanging around. Once thats used up I plan to lay in a quantity of Delvac 1300 15w40. I only use the tractor in relatively warm weather (May through October) so I feel that 15w40 will be fine, especially as I let it warm up good before I do any work with it.

I'd use a synthetic like Rotella 5W40 and change it once a year - in the fall. Your biggest problem is going to be moisture condensing in the oil pan. Water and oil when heated produce sludge; synthetic oil resists the effect of water and resist sludging better then dino oils.

I would follow Mark’s advice and make sure you’re starting with a clean oil pan before using synthetic oil.

Well David, seems your a youngster on this stuff, as for me now, What I did, is took off the oil pan, and cleaned it up real good, and then I used engine flush and ran the tractor for only about 30 minutes (then change the oil filter and oil) , then, after all that, I find that not using the tractors very much, I find the oll didn't get dirty that quick when I cleaned them up, and if not used very much, I changed the oil every year, but keep an eye on that oil, cause if you use the tractor more then you think, it will start getting dirty, then of course I change it, that keeps the engine working just fine... As for synthetic oil, I don't waste my money on that stuff, (some like it, I don't) Just good oil that you trust in and is highly recommended is the best, I use (ONLY) Valvoline, that works the best for me

I'd change oil once a year...in the fall when putting them away for the winter...that leaves fresh oil in the crankcase and ready to go come springtime. No more than you use that 140, you ought to sell it to me..hehe! As for synthetics, I run Mobil One in my Dodge pickup and change it once a year....got 108K on it...maybe 10-12K a year. I really like synthetic oil.....just wish one of the manufacturers would endorse using it in a diesel engine as it would be all my new JD would ever see.

Mark,
Shell now makes Rotella T 5W40 synthetic for diesels.
Mobil makes Delvac One 5W40 diesel full synthetic.

I thought JD was selling a synthetic oil for their tractors ?

Post a message over at the JD board as there are some who work for JD show up often.

Sell the 140? in reply to Mark , 03-15-2006 10:33:28
I have thought about it but it is one of those things that I don't see me doing. I helped my father restore this tractor just over 4 years ago. That is take it apart replaced what needed replaced, cleaned everything up repainted it and put all new decals on it.

He planted several acres of corn with it 4 years ago and found out he had cancer, I ended up plowing the corn out because he was to sick, by August he had passed away.

I was offered $5000.00 for it 2 years ago and turned it down as fast as I could say the words. I guess I will hang on to it as long as I have any use what so ever for it.

You have an opportunity here, you could sell it and try to forget, or you can keep it, and use it a little and say nothing. Otherwise, you could take it to tractor meets/shows or plow days. You could have a small sign that says something like "in memory of my father". Big thing is to let the rest of the family know how you feel, if you have kids, show them what Grandpa had. I am glad I can be with my Grandkids, and they almost lost both my wife and I to cancer. Pass the memories on is my suggestion.

Thanks for the suggestions. I don't have much time for the shows, everytime I know of one coming up I have something else to do. I do have a 2 year old little girl and my sister has 2 older children who are lucky enough to know my father.

One thing I we have started using the 140 for is for a hay ride on Halloween. My sister and her family live in a large subdivision where everyone usally walks from house to house. But we use the 140 and a 12' trailer with hay, all lights working on the tractor and trailer. We all have a lot of fun, expecally me driving an old tractor around one of the "upper class" areas. Since we live in north central Alabama the weather is fine as long as it is not raining.

More than enough reason to keep "er, David. I can imagine Dad smilin when you take the old girl out. You just need to think of excuses to use her more often!
