If you really want to get involved, ask them to prove it. Make them show you in writing all the fees related to the gas and the tank. And show you where you were notified of the fee and given a chance to opt-out. Also, depending on where you live, you may have recourse through a public services commission or business organization. Of course, the gas company is just trying to make money like any other business. They are being inventive. I had a neighbor whose gas company charged him for the cinder blocks the tank sat on to keep it off the ground.
