Hough payloader shifting

I have a 1953 4 wheel drive Hough payloader
with the Hercules 6 cy gas engine. It has a 4
speed transmission with an additional shifter
which determines if it goes forward or reverse.
The clutch works well but whenever I shift it
forward or reverse it will grind gears. I have
the clutch adjusted so it engages high up on
the pedal travel but can not stop the grinding.
The transmission oil is full. Thanks in
