Hough payloader shifting

I have a 1953 4 wheel drive Hough payloader with the Hercules 6 cy gas engine. It has a 4 speed transmission with an additional shifter which determines if it goes forward or reverse. The clutch works well but whenever I shift it forward or reverse it will grind gears. I have the clutch adjusted so it engages high up on the pedal travel but can not stop the grinding. The transmission oil is full. Thanks in advance for your comments.

if you take the cover off the top of the clutch housing-- you will see whats wrong-- the clutch shaft that runs through behind the clutch has a bolt that keeps the clutch from slipping on the shaft-- if it starts slipping it will not disengage all the way-- had it happer on a cletrac B and drove me nuts until I saw what was happening-- I'm sure this could be the prob. easy fix- just get the clutch peddle where you want it and tighten the bolt that keeps it from slipping-- I have a hough HR 4 wh dr. for sale if you are interested- 6 cyl. power steering and brakes- runs good looks good tires good used last summer but don't have any use for anything that large anymore-- i'm in up state NY hopes this helps

Hi Mark, don't have or know the first thing about a payloader persay, other than what they are and used for and where one or two are setting and rotting. But listening to your problem, and I might be way off base, but if are sure the clutch and pressure plate are good, maybe a shifter fork for starters? I'm just thinking in terms of mechanicals being mechanicals, and having been there with those same symptoms with one of my Deeres. And in my case, that shifter fork cost me some teeth on a couple of gears and some $$$ to fix, so be careful with it.

Good luck, Mark
