Five projects? I had heard that they had changed the course since I went through. Our class was a whole week where the participants camped just like the scouts do at scout camp. We had several projects to complete as a troop during that time, then we each had one project that we were to complete in 12-18 months afterward. Sure brings back a lot of memories. As far as your question goes, depending on the average age of your scouts, and your equipment, you could prepare a small plot and plant it with corn, beans, wheat, or whatever grows in your neck of the woods. Let them observe the results of the prepared field, the seeds germinating, the cultivating, the fruits coming on, and then the harvest. With 18 months, you should have plenty of time. Show them where their food comes from and what it takes to get it to their table. Farm safety and safety courses could be taught along the way, maybe another project taken care of in one pass. Hope this helps. Not sure how it fits in with improving your troop, but the kids would have a great learning experience.
