Is this a 12x12 transmission? If so, then check the linkages for play, slop, pins falling out, etc. Find the appropriate lever on the side of the transmission and see if you can push it into gear manually as you have a helper move the shift lever. Those linkages were known to be sloppy. I have one that locks in low range if I'm not careful about how I shift. Just a plain stupid design...... Otherwise, I would suspect you have an internal problem, likely a syncronizer. HTH.
