Cab insulation does as much for sound deeadening as climate control. New foam insulation and a foam rubber mat on the floor will help. I still wouldn't lose the earplugs though, 2 years ago (when I was 23) I would not have said this, but I've been weearing a set driving this freighliner and have noticed even so my ears ring more than I like. Any time it suddenly gets quieter than what I can hear of the turbo whine that ringing covers up any soft sounds for a few minutes. You should have no trouble hearing the radio through the earplugs if you quiet the cab some.
