How can i make my cab quiet?

I have an Oliver 1655 with a Year round QT-1 cab on it. I like the cab, but it is incredibly loud inside. I wear ear plugs. Most all of the cab foam is missing, and the floor is just steel and the tractor platform. I was thinking about a new cab foam kit, and a good heavy cut to fit rubber mat on the floor. I also thought about glueing soundproofing under the dash and hood, where they protrude into the cab. Will this make the cab quiet? Or is it a lost cause? I know its never gonna get silent inside, but i'd like to talk on my cell phone, or hear the radio in the cab, and really like to loose the ear plugs. Any tips or ideas? Thanks guys.
Josh

Buy a deere with a sound gaurd body. Your expectations are unreal for an old open station tractor. You will notice I said body not cab. Cabs are NOT designed to block noise. They are nothing but an enclosure OVER the open operator's station. They keep the rain off and maybe keep you a little warmer. Bodys are seperate sealed units that isolate you from the tractor, same as on a pickup. In my experience with old tractor cabs, you will lessen the noise by junking them.

I purchased some foam from a hobby shop and a few yards of a plastic coated cloth. I put teflon bushings under the cab support. replaced all the foam in the cab, and put the plastic coated cloth over that. Looked very good.

We had a couple of Hiniker's. Drilled holes in the main frame tubes and filled with silica sand, then plugged 'em. Seemed to help some.

Get used to it Josh,

It's the nature of the beast. Probably the main reason that my brains are scrambled and why I hate cabs. :>)

Noise has two sources. Airborne and structural vibration. The structure vibration is a larger cause than most people think. The cab must be isolated from the tractor. Rubber isolators at all 4 corners. No metal pieces bolted to cab and tractor to transmit vibration. Next is to block off airborne sound. Are there holes in the dash where sound can come in from the engine? fill them in. Use bulb seal, like on the door of you truck, to seal cab panels to the sheetmetal of the tractor. There will be a tremendous amount of noise off the top of the transmission and the dash. Heavy rubber mat on the floor to dampen/block the noise. There is special sound insulating foam that has a layer of rubber built in. Consider this to cover the console to block sound from that source. Finally every surface on the inside of the cab should be coated with sound insulation foam. This "traps" airbrone sound energy and keeps it from bouncing around the inside of the cab. Other posters have have listed some good sources for pre cut kits. One final thing to try. Experiment with raising the height of your exhaust pipe. Get that sound source as far away from the cab as possible.

Good luck, hope this helped

John

They are very helpful and quality stuff. I've got foam backed material coming and floor matt and under foam coming for my 1850. I got a kit for my White 4-180 but the Olivers are too old. You have to measure and buy material. Larry NE IL

Before you start gluing anything, make sure that every thing is bolted, welded, etc. tightly, so there"s nothing to rattle or buzz.

Cab insulation does as much for sound deeadening as climate control. New foam insulation and a foam rubber mat on the floor will help. I still wouldn't lose the earplugs though, 2 years ago (when I was 23) I would not have said this, but I've been weearing a set driving this freighliner and have noticed even so my ears ring more than I like. Any time it suddenly gets quieter than what I can hear of the turbo whine that ringing covers up any soft sounds for a few minutes. You should have no trouble hearing the radio through the earplugs if you quiet the cab some.

I have a 2255 with a cab. The previous owner had glued carpet to the floor, under the seat and to the lower side walls. I was surprised how much that quieted the cab down.
I am planning to additional quieting material to the ceiling and add an outlet to the radio for headphones. You can get a set from Gempler that will accept a radio input. Only thing you lose is listening to the engine run--best way in the world to detect a problem before it is a disaster.

You have the right ideas so far. We had a Case 1030 back in the 70's and put carpet padding and used carpet on the floor and glued some outdoor carpet around the cab panels. There are a lot of sound deadening mats available now that work real good.

Keep the motor off. I give a complete tractor warranty on this suggestion. Also does wonders for reducing the fuel and the repair bills. For sure.
