I have had good and bad luck with Dell. You might take a look at toshiba, but I think they only make laptops. People tend to hate dell or love dell. Check out consumer reports etc. Dial up will not do streaming video very well if at all. Honestly, I wouldn't waste your money on that XPS stuff. Any old thing (even last years model) will blow your mind if you're coming from a 300mhz machine. I am stuck like you on dial up (or Satelite). My guess is that WiMax (Wide Area WiFi) will be available before DSL or Cable in my area.
