Need computer advice!

My Dell is pretty much dead and I need to upgrade. Old Dell desktop lasted me many years since 1997 of everyday use, only went though 1 hard drive in all that time, but now the hard drive is failing again and the monitor finally died, and it's so outdated at this point with it's 300MHZ pentium II processor, I'm gonna junk it. This time I'd like a computer that can do streaming video, so I'm looking at a 400 series Dell XPS system, but I have dial up and being out in the sticks, thats all thats currently availible. I'd like to know if dial up can support streaming video?. My current dial up connection speed is 28.8kbps but it varys widely every time like a connection I had earlier today was 53.2kbps. Someday, DSL is supposed to availible here, but not yet.

I"m on cable so speed is not a factor. Streaming video on a dial up, I don"t think so. What I don;t like about buyer lets say from Dell, is that if you do have a problem with the machine, you have to ship it back. I get a new machine about every 3 years. As I can"t have much down time as my computer makes up my paycheck, I have a local build my machines. All quality parts and if the machine acts up, he usually gets me back up before the end of the day. Maybe a hundred $$ more than Dell but I also can talk to a real human right away and get the problem taken care of pronto. Good luck.

I got rid of dial up. Went to the Wild Blue web site and located a dealer in my area. He installed for free and the equipment was 299 I think, and it is 49 a month. I am now downloading at 510. You do have the lag time but it is awsome.

Can't give you any advice on computers, but some other internet options. Don't know how far you live from town or what is offered in your area, but I live 2 miles from town, but cannot get DSL or Cable. We use SpeedNet which is a wireless service. This is good out to about 15 miles from the tower if you have line of sight. Startup cost is about$200 and then a little over $50 per month. Another service that has just started here is ClearWire. Supposed to be good to 1.5 miles...but actually working out to 5 miles, with NO line of sight. Startup is like $50 and depending on how fast you want, runs around $35 per month and up.

Good luck!
Tim

You might want to check out your local satellite internet folks. The local store here now has a promotion of $100 start-up fee with $50 a month usage fee for a 3 year commitment. That's for 512 kbps download speed. Good luck.

Hey Jon.
Streaming Video is out for dial up.
I have built my own computers for years.
Also have gotten ready made from Ebay, Dell and EMachines.
The Ebay rig was a wreck. About as stable as a pile of glass tooth picks.

The Dell I got for my wife. Demension 2400 w/ flat panel screen. Good machine nothing fancy. Had to reinstall operating system on it. That was a joke. Got it done but you better have the driver disks handy or at least write down what hard ware is in it. You can DL any driver but there are multiple types and takes a wile to get the right one.

Best buy so far is the Emachines Model WB052. Got this one at Wal-Mart last fall for my Daughter. Came with a 3000+ AMD procesor, 120 gig Hard Drive, Nividea G Force 4 video, DVD burner, 512 meg ddr Ram, Every kind of media card slots, USB out the wazoo and a 17 inch monitor. For about $570.
Cant beat that with a stick. Its faster than my home built that I have $2500 in it. Couple years seperate them though.

I have had good and bad luck with Dell. You might take a look at toshiba, but I think they only make laptops. People tend to hate dell or love dell. Check out consumer reports etc.

Dial up will not do streaming video very well if at all.

Honestly, I wouldn't waste your money on that XPS stuff. Any old thing (even last years model) will blow your mind if you're coming from a 300mhz machine.

I am stuck like you on dial up (or Satelite). My guess is that WiMax (Wide Area WiFi) will be available before DSL or Cable in my area.

My dell is 2 years old,2 months ago the hard drive went out,the powersupply went out last week, just got it back yesterday.Dell has no customer service to speak of,and if you can find someone that can speak english they say return in in the original box and you might get it back in a couple months.I ended up paying to fix it myself, around $268 so far.I"ve been looking for a backup machine, figure I might as well buy one from walmart the warranty couldn"t be any worse.
Walmart sells emachines,compac,and Hp computers.
I"ve tried comparing prices at other stores, but they all have different number computers made by the same company. The HP computer numbers on the walmart computers don"t even come up on the HP web site.

I got a Toshiba Satellite notebook and thats what I'm on now, I guess I like it, but I've only had it since mid November. Everybody I've talked to who has a Dell notebook hates it, they seem to fall apart due to poor construction. Shopping for a replacment desktop this time. This Dell I have now was I think the very first generation XPS Dell and was top of the line when it was new, but of course pentium III came out less than a month after it was purchased. Yeah I'm not looking to spend a fortune on a computer with features I don't need. About all do currently is surf the internet.

I've seen ads for satellite internet, but thats probably pretty expensive isn't it?.Supposed to have DSL within maybe the next couple of years, but who knows, might be 5 years.

That funnel would probably be way too restrictive for streaming video wouldn't it?.

I am out in the boonies too and got tired of hearing that broadband would get to me someday, so I got satellite. It's not as good as cable, but definately has it all over dial-up. I can do streaming and just about anything else I want. The thing to remember is that with satellite, you have about a 7 second lag (the time it takes the signal to travel to the sat. and back), so it's no good for things like internet phone and so on. On dial-up, it would take me most of 4 hours to download a 10 meg file. Now it takes me about 1 to 2 minutes. The cost was kinda high. It set me back about $500.00, but I consider it money well spent to avoid the frustration of slow and lost connections. The monthly charge is about the same as most other broadband services. Might be something for you to check into.
