Early nitrogen will cause the wheat to keep more tillers. If your wheat is thin, early nitrogen would be a good idea. We generally plant fairly thick and don't apply nitrogen until it's around 6 inches tall (late April), to reduce tillering and limit leaching. Would do earlier with a split application if the wheat happens to be thin. Application can be a problem, most carts cause some damage. We do have a 12ft drop spreader and a light 30 hp tractor, which works great but it is a lot of work, so it doesn't always get used.
