O/T Chevy 350 starter question

'86 Blazer, new starter and flywheel, but I still don't think it sounds right. Got like a high-pitched whine when disengaging. I vaguely recall reading something once about gauging the proper clearance with an 1/8" drill bit. I think the bit was to be positioned between the teeth of the flywheel and the bendix. Am I chasing the coon up the right tree? Thanks, Anthony
