O/T Chevy 350 starter question

'86 Blazer, new starter and flywheel, but I still don't think it sounds right. Got like a high-pitched whine when disengaging. I vaguely recall reading something once about gauging the proper clearance with an 1/8" drill bit. I think the bit was to be positioned between the teeth of the flywheel and the bendix. Am I chasing the coon up the right tree?

Thanks,

Anthony

Had a starter that was giving me problems in a 350 Chevy. It would go bad to soon all the time. It ended up being a bent bolt that changed the shim distance when it was torked up. Changed the bolt out and the problem went away. Just role your bolts on a flat surface and check them. Mark H.

Never could figure out how to get a 1/8" drill bit into where the starter drive and ring gear mesh without removing the transmission.

Manual says 'high pitched whine after engine fires as key is being released... Distance too small between starter pinion and flywheel. high pitched whine during cranking (before engine fires)... Distance too great...'

Get a variety of shims with different thicknesses and try to find a happy medium. 0.010" made a difference on my G20. I really think it was 0.005", but that seems too fussy for Chevy.

While you are looking at the pinion gear, I suggest you take a good look at the transmision housing. We ran into starter problems and ended up changing everything including the flywheel.
It turned out to be a crack in the aluminum bellhousing of a Ford Ranger that could only be seen when there was load on the starter.
That took about 2 years to figure that one out because the symptoms would come and go.

Try shims. Auto parts place oughta have them.

Here's a link to a CarCraft article about shimming Chevy starters. They are working with an aftermarket gear-reduction starter, but the principle is the same.
