In 71 (I think) Chevy gave the 396 a "factory bore job", still called it a 396, but with a .030 inch overbore, displacement was about 402... And the displacement is the area displaced by the piston during travel. Volume at bottom minus volume at top, only thing that changes is the piston moves, so area in the head doesn't effect displacement.
