Dave, a flat black colored sooty deposit is often indicative of excess unburned fuel from running the carb too rich (try leaning its top adjustment needles),,,,,,,,or a restriction in the air cleaner or bowl or air inlet piping,,,,,,,,or the chokes not opening and staying open fully,,,,,,,,,,or a weak spark,,,,,,or too cold of plugs (try HOTTER like Autolite 3116) (use wire core NOT carbon core plug wires),,,,,,,,or youre not runnign the temp at 180 and higher (use shutters etc) ,,,,,,,or long idle periods. YOU GOTTA HAVE A GOOD BLUE SPARK Hows the points n condensor and cap n rotor???
