I am having trouble with my plugs fouling on my A. I was reading where in the 60 series john deere corrected the carb issue? if i remember right so the right plug esspecially wouldnt foul. Question is can I put a 60 series carb on my A to prevent the fouling. Also any other tips to prevent fouling would be appreciated.

Allen the spark plugs are fouled with black color. Everytime i change them i get a dry one on the left and a gas soaked one on the right

Dave, a flat black colored sooty deposit is often indicative of excess unburned fuel from running the carb too rich (try leaning its top adjustment needles),,,,, ,,or a restriction in the air cleaner or bowl or air inlet piping,,,,, ,,or the chokes not opening and staying open fully,,,,, ,,,,or a weak spark,,,,, or too cold of plugs (try HOTTER like Autolite 3116) (use wire core NOT carbon core plug wires),,,,, ,,or youre not runnign the temp at 180 and higher (use shutters etc) ,,,,, ,or long idle periods. YOU GOTTA HAVE A GOOD BLUE SPARK Hows the points n condensor and cap n rotor???

Good luck n God Bless

I had the same problem with a model b. Never did get it straightend out. My 45 cu.in. harley davidson was doing the same thing. Seemed to always be front plug. Put in new condenser. No more trouble.

Everyone has a good sugestion, BUT, those old 2 cyl. engines will only fire right with A C C88 L plugs. I know from experience, btdt.

Dave, the answer is NO. The lettered series tractors like the A had a single barrell carb and a commom intake manifold that served BOTH cylinders. The numbered series like the 60 went to a 2 barrell carb PLUS a manifold that had two seperate isolated intake ports, one for for each cylinder and carb barrell. So, BOTH the carbs and the manifolds are far different.

Things that can help reduce plug foulng are:

1) A good HOT spark 2) Use shutters or other types of radiator air restriction etc to get and keep the operating temp up to 180 degrees and over. 3) DO NOT adjust the carb any more richer then necesary. 4) Use a heat range or 2 HOTTER spark plugs (try Autolite 3116 (Styled) or 3077 (Unstyled) depending on which plug size the tractor uses) 5) Insure theres no inlet air restrictions like a cloged air filter or bowl or inlet piping and be sure the choke opens fully and stays open. 6) Avoid long idle periods. 7) Dont use higher octane gas then necessary.

I don't think a 60 carb will help or even work on the A with out changeing the head manifold and carb. The 60 I have had a 2 barrel carb on it and all the As I have messed with had a 1 barrel carb. Question do you work your A or do you just drive it around and play with it. If all you do is play, then you might need to make it work some. I have a 1935 B that does the same thing unless I put it to work. And yes I do make the old girl work, I use it to rake hay in the summer

Dave,

What color is the deposit left on the plug? Red, white, black, green? Is it wet or dry?

All depends on what is fouling the plug.

Allan
